GATE 2024 Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering: After Environmental Science and Engineering (ES) and Humanities and Social Sciences  papers in Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE)2021, Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering and Geomatics Engineering have become latest entrants. With the addition of these two papers, the total number of subjects has reached to 29 for GATE 2024.

The GATE 2021 was organised by the IIT Bombay which has handed over GATE duties to IIT Kharagpur, the organising institute of GATE 2024. The Organising Institute is responsible for the end-to-end process and coordination amongst the administering Institutes.

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs at Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee) jointly administer the conduct of GATE. The operations related to GATE in each of the 8 zones are managed by a zonal GATE Office at the IITs or IISc.

GATE is one of the most coveted exams for getting admission in master’s degree in premier technical colleges and jobs at public sector companies. GATE 2021 was conducted from February 5-7 and February 12-14, 2021.

GATE 2024: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur will conduct the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2024. IIT Bombay has handed over the responsibility of organising GATE 2024 to IIT Kharagpur after successful completion of GATE 2021 on schedule in spite of the pandemic. The examination dates of the GATE 2024 has not been announced yet and is expected to be released soon.

Examination pattern of GATE

  1. GATE is fully Computer Based Test (CBT).
  2. All test papers of GATE are entirely objective type. The pattern of questions will include some Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQ), while the remaining questions may include Multiple Select Questions (MSQ) and/or Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions.

Eligibility Criteria

A candidate who is currently studying in the 3rd or higher years of any undergraduate degree program OR has already completed any Government approved degree program in Engineering / Technology / Architecture / Science / Commerce / Arts is eligible to appear GATE. 

Age Limit Criteria

There is no age limit to appear for GATE exam. Meanwhile, the GATE 2021 examination was conducted by IIT Bombay on February 6, 7, 13 and 14. Also, Environmental Science and Engineering and Humanities and Social Sciences two papers were introduced in GATE-2021. The total number of subject papers were 27.

The GATE 2021 results were declared on March 19. A total of 7,11,542 candidates appeared in the GATE 2021 exam, of whom 17.82% or 1,26,813 candidates qualified. Further, 38 candidates topped the GATE 2021 exam.

About GATE Exam

Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a national examination conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore and the seven Indian Institutes of Technology (at Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee) on behalf of the National Coordination Board (NCB)-GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India.

Qualifying in GATE is a mandatory requirement for seeking admission and/or financial assistance to:

  • Master’s programs and direct Doctoral programs in Engineering/Technology/Architecture and
  • Doctoral programs in relevant branches of Arts and Science, in the institutions supported by the MoE and other Government agencies. Even in some colleges and institutions, which admit students without MoE scholarship/assistantship, the GATE qualification is mandatory.

Further, many Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) have been using the GATE score in their recruitment process.
